News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Bath Abbey recently welcomed students from Three Ways school in Bath to visit the new exhibition Threads through Creation, a display of 12 large and colourful textile panels telling the bible story of how the earth was made.

The students had a tour led by Learning Manager Polly Andrews and there was plenty of time to enjoy the rich detail on the panels. From birds to insects to animals to planets, the artist Jacqui Parkinson has chosen an imaginative and bold way to tell a familiar story.

The Three Ways students, led by teacher Pippa Harding, made sketches of the features that caught their eye and enjoyed spending time in the peaceful and inspiring atmosphere of the Abbey. Their visit started at 10am, just after the Abbey is open, which is a good time for schools to experience the beautiful building as it almost feels like this Tudor masterpiece is all theirs.

Following the tour, the students went downstairs to the new Learning room, a result of the nearly completed Footprint Lottery-funded project. A craft activity then took place which gave everyone the chance to explore colour, texture and pattern, inspired by the exhibition. Colourful appliqué dolphins and butterflies were created, framed and displayed against the Tudor stone wall at the back of the Learning room.

Class teacher Pippa Harding said, “The students really benefitted from investigating the intricate artwork before having a go in the workshop. The wonderful facilities at the Abbey enhanced our visit and made the whole experience very positive for everyone”.

Threads Through Creation is open at Bath Abbey until 19 March

One class member added, “I enjoyed sticking and making my collage. The best collage was the galaxy one.”

Polly Andrews said, “It’s always a pleasure to welcome Three Ways students to the Abbey. The Threads through Creation exhibition is so exciting with rich colours and amazing detail. Every student had their favourite animal and enjoyed creating their own design.

“Bath Abbey’s learning programme exists to give schools a unique and enjoyable experience and we can tailor our workshops and tours to suit all ages and requirements. We really look forward to seeing Three Ways at the Abbey again soon.”

Threads through Creation by Jacqui Parkinson runs at Bath Abbey until 19 March. Please see the Abbey’s website for opening times.
