News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Lawn Manor Academy has celebrated the diverse range of cultures and backgrounds at the school at its annual Culture Day.

Pupils were invited to swap their uniforms for the day for cultural dress, while their lessons gave them the opportunity to learn about different traditions from around the world.

With over 30 nationalities and 36 languages spoken at the school, the day was a vibrant collection of colour and performance, with presentations on food and pupils taking part in a show of over 20 different types of dance styles, as well as games and other activities to highlight the wealth of cultures and diversity across the school.

Year 7 pupils also shared their culture further by inviting staff to have Mehdi designs decorated and painted on their hands, which they had practised at home on friends and family.

The day was organised by Caireen Young, Head of Art at Lawn Manor and Head of Pupil Development & Character, and Laura Burchall, Head of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. Caireen said, “It was great to be able to dedicate a day for staff and pupils to come together to celebrate our diverse range of cultures in our community as a whole for all staff and pupils. This is the fourth year we’ve put this day together and it has got to be our best one ever!

“We feel it is vital that our students develop important life skills, such as empathy, critical thinking and intercultural competence. By taking the time to share our cultures and for everyone to celebrate and share what makes us proud to be who we are will have long-lasting community-wide benefits.

“The skills which have been displayed by our students have been awe-inspiring – it was an honour to share this opportunity as a school.”
