News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

English Heritage invites families to join them at Stonehenge this summer for fun archaeology activities every day and a fantastic new family trail Where’s My Shadow?

Young budding archaeologists are invited to try their hand at unearthing the past in the special Stonehenge excavation sandboxes, using a selection of archaeologists’ tools. Replica artefacts from across the centuries are ready to be found, giving children the chance to get excited about the past and learn more about the history of Stonehenge through the things that have been left behind.

Dig supervisors will be on hand to reveal the stories behind the pottery, tools and treasures, and what place they have in the story of Stonehenge.

After making some exciting archaeological discoveries, pick up a free summer quest sheet (or access a digital version in French, Spanish or German), check out the Neolithic Houses and chat to the friendly English Heritage volunteers to find out what everyday life was like for the people of Stonehenge.

Test your strength at the pulling stone before picking up some lunch and setting off to the stones to enjoy a picnic with one of the most iconic views in the world. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, make your way to the Stonehenge café to recharge, where any English Heritage Member spending £10 or more will receive up to two free children’s lunch bags, including a drink, sandwich, crisps, fruit and cake.

Richard Dewdney, Head of Historic Properties for Stonehenge, said, “There’s so much to see and do at Stonehenge this summer. Our hands on archaeology activity and Where’s My Shadow quest are a great way to have fun and just enjoy being out and about in this brilliant landscape. There’s always more to discover at Stonehenge and we hope that lots of families will come along and get involved.”

English Heritage is hosting the Stonehenge Kids’ Dig family activity and Where’s My Shadow quest every day over the summer holidays, giving everyone the opportunity to explore Stonehenge in a fun hands on way. Activities are included in the price of Stonehenge admission and are free to English Heritage members, National Trust members and Local Resident Pass holders.

Stonehenge is open from 9:30am -7pm throughout the summer with last admissions at 5pm. The Stonehenge Kids’ Dig activity runs between 20 July and 1 September  from 10am – 6pm daily and is suitable for children aged 5 and upwards to enjoy.
