News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

There is a whole range of family activities and events planned over the summer by the team from the Bath Preservation Trust. The events will take place at Beckford’s Tower, the Herschel Museum and No1 Royal Crescent, with dates and details below.

Pirate Taxi outdoor family circus show by Pirates of the Carabina

The Grotto Paddock close to Beckford’s Tower
Sunday 11 August at 3pm & 7pm

Join in for an incredible and engaging circus show on the paddock below Beckford’s Tower by an award-winning circus company.

Taking place in, on and around an old-school London cab, with original live music, a mechanically ingenious set, humour and extraordinary air bound performances, prepare to be wowed by circus performers Pirates of the Carabina and their aerial show. You won’t believe the stunts this daredevil duo are able to pull off.

Pirate Taxi is performed by a cast of two and is suitable for all ages.

Bring a picnic blanket and/or a folding chair. Refreshments including delicious food and drink will be available.

Travel: The Grotto Paddock is a field, situated 500 metres south of Beckford’s Tower. It is one stop from the Lansdown Park & Ride.

Please use public transport wherever possible. Local parking is limited. 

No.1 Creators Club: Photography Portraits

No.1 Royal Crescent
3 August 10am – 12pm

Practice photography and learn about Georgian Portraits. Play around with old and new cameras, and take photographic portraits inspired by the paintings in No.1 Royal Crescent. Learn about how the portraits showed the fashion and style of the era and make your own modern day versions using costume and props.

Sessions will cover similar concepts. You’re welcome to book for both or just one.

Attendees for the July workshop will be offered the chance to have their portraits made in the session exhibited at the Holburne Museum. Contact the artist for more info.

Amazing Space Discoveries Planetarium Show

Explore the night sky and find out about William and Caroline Herschel and their amazing space discoveries in this interactive family show.

The planetarium show will last approximately 40 minutes. Pre-booking for ALL members of your group, both adults and children, is essential.

Starry Skies Constellation Trail

24 July – 1 Sept,10am – 4pm

How well do you know the night sky? The museum team has hidden some beautiful embroidered constellations in and around the museum for a special summer star trail. When you’ve found them all, have a go at weaving a constellation to take home.

No.1 Creators Club: Creative Collage

Get inspired by the beautiful buildings of Bath, and create a layered paint and collage artwork exploring the geometry and forms of Bath architecture.

Led by artist Taryn Thomas, the session will explore the history behind the city’s design and introduce collage, painting and observational skills in a relaxed and creative environment.

Learn to create your own ceramic bust reminiscent of a Georgian lady or gentleman. Think about who is portrayed in the sculptures, how they have chosen to look important and how do we show our importance in portraits in the modern day? This workshop is accessible for all ages and you will leave with your own sculpture creation!

2 November 10am – 12pm

Leap into landscapes and cast a sculptural tile, using plaster of Paris, inspired by landscape paintings at No.1 Crescent and views of Bath. Imagine and create your own endless landscape using an oil pastel print and paint wash technique.

No.1 Creators Club: Flower Power Collages

23 November 10am – 12pm

Take inspiration from artist Mary Delany’s floral collages and make your own with a contemporary twist. Create beautiful sgraffito flowers or leaves and experiment with printing and collage to create a flower power collage.

Museum Late Openings – Third Thursday of Every Month (June to October)

20 June – 17 October @ 6-9pm

On the Third Thursday of every month starting June 2024 you can look forward to a special late opening at No.1 Royal Crescent! Wander around the twilit museum and take in the story of the house from a fresh perspective.

With standard admission to the museum (£15.50 per person, or free for children), you will enjoy after-hours access to the museum’s current exhibition.
