Year 6 pupils from St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Writhlington, Radstock, have been getting up close to democracy on a recent visit to the Houses of Parliament.

Their visit, which was part funded by the Parliament UK Education and Engagement Team, included a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster where the House of Lords and House of Commons sit.

The children also enjoyed seeing the Sovereign’s Entrance in The Victoria Tower and the Robe Room where the King prepares to open Parliament.

“Visiting Parliament was an incredible experience for both children and staff,” said Miss Golden, Year 6 Class Teacher and Key Stage Leader. “Many of the children hadn’t been to London before so to give them the opportunity to visit the capital and see the sights, as well as see British Values and democracy in action, was brilliant.”

Kara, a Year 6 pupil, added, “It’s been an amazing day but what stood out for me was the Queen Elizabeth tower because of how tall and grand it is!”

As well as visiting parliament, the children also took a 5km walking tour of London’s highlights, taking in Big Ben and the Queen Elizabeth Tower, Westminster Abbey, the Cenotaph, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade, St James Park and Buckingham Palace.
