Pupils and staff at Holbrook Primary School, Trowbridge, are delighted to have achieved Eco Schools accreditation in recognition of pupil’s passion for environmental issues and their strong desire to actively protect our planet. They are very proud of their prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag!
Holbrook School has a dedicated Eco Council made up of elected representatives. They work alongside the school’s science leader and therapeutic gardener to explore ways to improve the immediate school environment to promote diversity and sustainability, as well as promoting active strategies to support the environment such as waste reduction and energy conservation.
Katie Mitchell, Science Leader at Holbrook School, said, “It is a pleasure to be involved in the eco-council, our children are so passionate about the environment and this shone through our eco-councillor’s hard work, as well as the interest and excitement that rippled across the school.
“Holbrook ‘eco-dragons’ played an essential part in the green flag work, and particularly enjoyed the introduction of our eco code; – earth care, people care and fair share. The eco council is particularly special as these children do not always see the amazing impact they have. For example, our Year 6 eco councillors who have moved on while the rest of the school can enjoy the influence of their actions.”
The school has recently included Earth Care as a golden thread throughout their curriculum, with clearly identified, meaningful opportunities to teach children about climate change, plastic pollution and diversity loss.
Rose Nunn, Deputy Headteacher, said, “Holbrook children are passionate about the environment and the natural world, and we are so proud of them. We are delighted to be able to support their commitment and provide regular opportunities to extend their knowledge and understanding of sustainability and conservation across our fantastic Holbrook curriculum.”
Holbrook Primary School feel very fortunate to provide therapeutic gardening to children. Pippa McKinnon from Mossy Green Kids works with individuals and groups at the school and is an integral part of the school’s passion for the environment and Earth Care.
She explained, “Holbrook children have a fantastic compassion for nature. From the woodlice and ladybirds in the school garden, to creatures living across the world, they care deeply. Their ever growing awareness and collective care have created such a positive force for good. Their commitment as guardians of Earth, the planet they call home, is truly inspirational.”
Holbrook School has an open day for prospective parents / carers on Wednesday 16 October and Tuesday 26 November 2024 9:30am – 11am. Please contact the school office for more information 01225 753708.
