With the chilly weather already paying a visit, Damian Bush from GreenSmart Services offers his top tips for cutting those winter fuel bills
For the past four years, GreenSmart Services has been looking after the plumbing, heating and gas installation needs for families and businesses across the Bath, Keynsham, Saltford and Wiltshire region. One of the most common enquiries that we receive from families at this time of year is how to improve heating systems in order to reduce those winter heating bills.
Safe and efficient
Without a doubt, the main things to consider is making sure that your gas appliances – and this particularly means boilers – as well as hot water cylinders are in a safe and operational condition. This provides that crucial peace of mind over the winter and Christmas period when, let’s be honest, we want to be focusing on fun with our families and eating too much!
A major part of this is annual boiler servicing. This is essential for all boilers, while if your boiler is a little on the older and more tired side, it may be worth considering an upgrade. Servicing your boiler will
- Keeps it operating efficiently
- Able to identify problems early to avoid more costly work in the future
- Keeps the boiler operating safely
- It keeps me in a job (don’t put this one haha)
- Gives the boiler the best chance at a long life and increases peace of mind for the client
The good news here is that we offer a 0% finance option so that the payment can be spread over two years.
Alongside a boiler service, my advice is always to take a fabric first approach to energy saving, by which I mean taking a look at the whole structure of your family home. This includes checking that the loft and wall insulation is working as well as it can be, there’s effective draft proofing in place and that the double glazing is still doing its job. For example, if you can feel drafts from your windows or there’s condensation forming inside the glass, there’s a good chance that it needs attention.
Once these things have been addressed, then it’s a very good idea to look at the heating system itself. There are a host of updates that can really help cut the bills and create a more effective heating system, such as a more efficient boiler and radiators, thermostatic radiator valves, room thermostat(s) and cleaning the heating system to ensure its using energy as efficiently as possible.
While there is always an initial cost, the great result is that in the long run you can certainly save a lot as well as making your home more comfortable.
We’re always keen to call by and discuss the heating options in your home, we can offer up a 12 year warranty on boiler installations.
