Year 4 pupils from Bathwick St Mary Church School recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to London as part of their learning about our capital city and ‘sacred places’ in Religious Education.
After arriving at school at 6.45am, children travelled to Trafalgar Square and took a walk past many famous landmarks including Horseguards Parade, Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Parliament Square, the Houses of Parliament and the Elizabeth Tower. They then crossed Westminster Bridge took a trip on the London Eye!
The perfect weather meant all the children, many of whom had not travelled to London before or been on the London Eye, were able to gain a fascinating perspective on our capital city.
After a picnic lunch in Jubilee Gardens, the children journeyed to St Paul’s Cathedral. In August 2018, Year 4 pupil Freddie had entered a competition to design a new banner for St Paul’s Cathedral, which represented him and where he was from. He won this competition, which meant his class could enjoy a free trip to the cathedral.
Freddie and his classmates thoroughly enjoyed the enriching experience, with Freddie commenting, “My favourite part of the whole day was climbing the 420 steps to the three levels of the dome. I was amazed at the inside of the dome from the Whispering Gallery and also the views over London right from the top of St Paul’s Cathedral from the Golden Gallery!”
Celestine also loved the trip, adding, “When we went on the London Eye, you couldn’t feel it moving but we slowly got right to the top and I loved seeing the London skyline!”
Headteacher, Kevin Purkiss, explained that this trip was one of the many enriching experiences which children enjoy at Bathwick. “It often the amazing trips and inspiring visitors that children particularly remember from their primary school days. We build our curriculum around these meaningful opportunities which enthuse and inspire our young minds.”
