News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Families from across the Bath and West Wiltshire region are being invited to take part in the Circuit of Bath sponsored walk, which is 17 years old this year and still one of Julian House’s most popular fundraising events.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday 23 September taking in some of Bath’s most beautiful near countryside. It is free to enter, with participants asked to raise as much sponsorship as they can so that Julian House can continue to help and support homeless and marginalised men and women.

Although the whole route is 20 miles long, participants can choose to walk as little as two miles thanks to a unique shuttle bus service that operates via the 5 checkpoints during the day. The checkpoints / starting points are at Kingwood School Upper Sports Pavilion, Lansdown; Bathampton Mill; Canal Centre, Limpley Stoke; St. Gregory’s Catholic College 6th Form building, Odd Down; and Newbridge Park & Ride.

The walk has been described as the perfect day out for those wishing to walk with family, friends, dogs or alone, enjoying the spectacular views along the way. Walkers can choose to start at one of 5 checkpoints and walk either clockwise or anti-clockwise. Everybody who completes the whole 20 mile route will be rewarded with a medal.

Stephen Chesworth, Community and Events organiser at Julian House, explained, “Whether you’re a keen walker or a family looking for a pleasant afternoon out, the Circuit of Bath is a terrific event. People who have lived in Bath for years have been surprised at the stunning countryside which is right on their doorstep, just two or three miles from the bustling city centre. One particular stretch, from Bathampton to Limpley Stoke, follows the canal path which makes it suitable for family groups. Other parts of the route take in quaint villages such as Woolley, Upper Swainswick, Englishcombe and South Stoke. Dogs, on leads, also really enjoy taking part.

The event is free to enter but we ask participants to raise as much sponsorship as they can so that we can continue to help homeless and excluded individuals in Bath and surrounding areas. We hope that the event will raise around £20,000, which will help to fund the many other projects we are running supporting vulnerable and excluded men and women back into independent living.

Most people are aware of the Julian House emergency hostel which is now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, few are aware that the charity now manages 155 bed spaces for clients with a wide spectrum of needs. Julian House also runs three social enterprise projects in the region, including the popular Bath Bike Workshop which is providing practical work experience, training and employment support.

The Circuit of Bath Walk is sponsored by Thermae Bath Spa and is part of the Bathscape Walking Festival which takes place 15-23 September 2018.
