Ian Waller and family enjoy an afternoon of fun at Bath on Ice
Hooray, Bath on Ice is back and we love it! This is our fourth straight year on the ice and what a difference 12 months can make. Last year, while the then nine-year old Eve skated with the confidence of a seasoned roller-skater, her younger brothers Dan (eight) and Joe (five) spent most of the time either picking up themselves up after yet another spill or being pushed around on the giant bananas available for younger, less able skaters.
One year later and all three were zooming around under their own steam and happily showing their dad how it should be done.
Bath on Ice has been a welcome winter tradition in Bath and we can strongly recommend it for an hour or so’s family fun. Simply book in online at www.bathonice.com, turn up in time to pick up your skates and off you go. The queues are pretty short, the staff are excellent and really friendly, and the whole set-up is a pleasure.
For younger skaters, special skates are available plus you can hire giant plastic penguins and seals (no more bananas) to either push them around on or to act as supports. Do bear in mind though that these do get booked up pretty quickly during busier sessions. The rink is also wheelchair accessible and wheelchair users are welcome to book and skate at any public sessions.
OK, it’s barely the biggest rink and there’s not a lot of room for spins, pirouettes and synchronised twizzles, but then that’s not the point. This is more about a fun and giggles with your friends and families, with a backdrop of Abba and Bruno Mars over the loudspeakers and the chance of a gorgeous hot chocolate afterwards.
In fact, the hot chocolate is just the start of the apres-skating fun. There’s also a full bar, snacks and really rather good pizzas available, plus you can even reserve seats for birthday parties and special events (we hosted a birthday party here last year and it was a huge success!). And if you’ve still got the energy after all of this, you can take the very short walk along the path to the Glow in the Dark Mini Golf, which looks like a great way to end a family day out.
Bath on Ice has become something of a family tradition for us, with grown-ups and children all taking to the ice and loving the experience. With gift vouchers available, we might well also be spreading the fun a little wider this year…
