Mikaila Tobin and her family pay a visit to the recent fantastic fun day at The University of Bath
We were off to explore the University of Bath Community Festival that was taking place to celebrate the University’s 50 years of being in the city – and what a day it was! The University of Bath is an amazing place for any number of sports and academic studies and achievements, and it was exciting to think that we were going to try out new experiences for us and get to use facilities that are usually for the use of Olympic athletes!
Almost as soon as we arrived things started to get really exciting, with red smoke flares was on the ground announcing the spectacular arrival of the Red Devil’s parachute display team. It was amazing to see them floating down while carrying a giant flag to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary – what a start to the day!
The festival itself had three main zones to get involved in – active, creative and discover. The active zone was naturally based in the university’s sports training village, where our children, Lara and Monty, got the chance to swim in the 50m pool used by the GB swim squad. The team kinetix display was also a great sight to see, with fantastic parkour and acrobatics, while the climbing wall and zip wire was extremely popular. Another great opportunity in this area, open to adults, was to experience the thrill of the bobsleigh track!
Within the creative zone was a fun dance taster session, open to all. There was printmaking and badgemaking, you could even get on a bike and use pedal power to make a smoothie!
With so much to see, we didn’t actually make it to the discover zone, where visitors had the chance to build a crystal, have a go on the rugby scrum machine, meet Team Bath racing and sit in the formula student car, amongst so many other interesting talks and interactive experiments.
With so much to do and see, all promoting the amazing resources available at the university – many of which are available to families in the area – we just wished we could have spent longer to enjoy it all!
