Team Bath play their home games at the wonderful sports village up at The University of Bath. The Sports Village is home to an impressive list of sports stars across a range of disciplines taking in swimming, badminton, rugby and more. It’s also home to an incredible range of facilities, classes and training opportunities open to us all, whatever your sporting and fitness goals.

However, for now we were focusing on Team Bath Netball and their first home game of the season against the Severn Stars. As soon as you arrive at the Team Bath Arena, the energy of the crowd grabs hold of you, and you’re soon swept up in the excitement of the event.

The crowd ranges from young fans and school groups, many perhaps getting their first experience of top level live sport, to former players and seasoned watchers, all excited to see the new generation in action.

The atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming, and just ideal for a family early evening out. Once you’re in the arena, there’s hotdogs and drinks to enjoy, while the announcements across the loudspeakers are great for keeping everyone up to date with what is happening next.

Once in our seats, the lights dimmed and the teams were announced, with every one of the Bath players given a hero’s welcome.

As for the game itself, netball is fact moving, super quick and loads of fun. Right from the start you can’t help but be impressed by the speed and fitness of the players, running to find space, firing off passes and aiming to avoid the advances of their opponents.

Scores come quick and fast, as do the blasts of the referee’s whistle. Fortunately, I’d taken along a good friend with me who happens to be an experienced player and was able to keep me up with the infringements and rules. However, if you’re less savvy, no worry at all, as you soon get used to the basic rules.

Unfortunately, while Bath started off strongly, the Severn Star came back strongly and by the end of the first quarter, with a gap was starting to open in the scores. And as the halftime buzzer blared, Bath were looking decidedly second best.

Still, the crowd were loving and cheering every point. For the mid game break, there was also a very impressive display to enjoy by the Dorothy Coleborn dancers, as well as snacks and fizzies to top up on.

With the game back underway, Bath continued to fall behind and while the final result went against them, it was still a hugely enjoyable evening out. There was even a chance for the younger fans to meet the players at courtside for selfies and autographs.

So if you haven’t been to a Team Bath netball match before, give it a go. It’s a great evening out at an impressive venue and even the hotdogs looked inviting. Go Team Bath!
