Pupils from Churchfields, The Village School, recently enjoyed a rugby training session with Melksham RFC. The session was arranged by the school’s rugby coaches, Alex Neal and Chris Blake, who run regular training sessions with pupils as young as five and up to ten years of age.
The training session at the new Melksham RFC facilities took place with Head Coach Scott Simmons under flood lights in early December. Alex explained, “It was a bitterly cold dark evening but all 16 young pupils and a full complement of parents turned out. Scott expertly directed the children around for half an hour and has extended an invitation to have the pupils back as guard of honour at a first XV home game, complete with sausages and chips, and VIP spot in the clubhouse.”
“Both Chris and I have a love of the game of rugby and an aspiration to see children developing simple hand-eye coordination skills of simply throwing and catching a ball on their own, to the teamwork and discipline required of running, passing and catching in a game and with pupil. Experiences like this one with Melksham RFC really help the children to achieve these goals.”
