If you you think science is boring, think again. Mark Thompson’s Spectacular Science Show is coming to Komedia in Bath and this is science like you have never seen it before.
Designed for children and adults alike, Mark’s Spectacular Science Show explores the strange and magical properties of matter with exploding elephant’s toothpaste, vortex-generating dustbins and even howling jelly babies!
We caught up with Mark to chat about what his show will offer to his lucky audience
It’s fantastic that you’re bringing your spectacular science show to Bath. What can we expect from the show?
The show is full of exciting science experiments and there is always something going on. I am either performing an experiment or setting up an experiment and while I’m doing all this, I have a light hearted and fun delivery style that appeals to kids and bigger kids alike.
What is your favourite part of the show?
Performing the whole show is my favourite part. There is nothing more exhilarating than an auditorium full of quiet families waiting to see what is going to happen while I share little nuggets of science information so that the kids learn something along the way.
If I had to pick a favourite part I would have to say there are two, the first part where I’m setting fire to things and the last section where I’m creating some fabulous chemical reactions.
Why is it important to you to make science fun?
Science can be a dry subject, indeed any subject can be dry if delivered in the wrong way. It’s super important to me that the kids that come to my shows have fun and leave with a smile on their face. With that will come a positive engagement with science and I hope a passion that stays with them for the rest of their lives.
Did you like science at school?
I loved science at school, more so at secondary school than primary, I think. It is very difficult for primary school teachers to make things fun and engaging with science, but I really got into my science stride at secondary school. It was definitely the experiments that got me hooked.
What is the best question that you’ve been asked by a child at one of your shows?
I had a 10 year old child ask me what shape the Universe is! Kids ask the most incredible, insightful questions. It took me a while to come up with an answer that they could understand but I love how kids challenge me in that way.
