Freshford Church School welcomed Team Bath Netball Super League players Phoebe Maslen and Jayda Pechova on Tuesday 4 June to officially open the school’s new netball court.
The players demonstrated key skills and passes to all of the pupils and, together with head teacher Andrew Wishart, cut a ribbon to declare the court open. Members of the Freshford School netball club then enjoyed a training session with Jayda and Phoebe.
Having experienced a Team Bath Super League match recently with his daughter, PTA Treasurer Mark Rawson said, “I was amazed by the speed and skill with which Team Bath played. It was so inspiring for my daughter and her friends to watch, and they have come back with an incredible energy for the game and role models to aspire to.
“The PTA has fundraised for new lines to be painted on our school playground to create a netball court – just a small part of an ongoing playground re-development project aimed at encouraging more outdoor play and sports for all pupils.”
Head Teacher Andrew Wishart said of the visit, “For our children to have this morning training with Phoebe and Jayda, two brilliant netball players from the elite Team Bath, was an inspirational experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives offering a dynamic demonstration of just how far the children can take their skills if they dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their purpose and their ambition.
“A huge thank you to everyone at Team Bath.”
A small village primary school, Freshford has limited outdoor space, so the staff and the PTA must be creative in finding ways to give all the children opportunities to play sports and outdoor activities within the school. And as school budgets get ever tighter the PTA has an even larger role to play in finding the funds to enable the playground re-development to reach completion.
