News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

With the end of August being the perfect time to dig out our woollens while there is time to enjoy sprucing them up for the winter months to come, No.1 Royal Crescent is hosting a Creative Visible Mending Workshop for adults on 30 August.

The workshop is open to all abilities and will cover a range of visible mending techniques for knitted materials, including:

  • Darning
  • Reverse darning
  • Applique
  • Swiss darning

In addition, if there is enough time, the workshop will also look at how decorative stitches can be turned to practical use with chain, blanket (honeycomb) and seed stitches.

The two-hour course includes mending materials – sewing notions and threads (feel free to bring your own sewing kit if you prefer) – while tea and coffee will also be available. Participants are welcome to bring damaged woollens to dive to work on.

Concession price available (Seniors 65+, Student, NHS, Blue Light)

Ellie Giles, Learning and Engagement Officer at Bath Preservation Trust, said, “Our children’s learning and engagement programme is well-established, with active outreach and school trips all year round. We feel that adult learning and development is also very important, and we hope that this new programme is inspiring people to try something new and perhaps discover a new passion.”

Patrizia Ribul, Director of Museums at Bath Preservation Trust, added, “We are really enjoying working with local artists and using the spaces in our museums as a hub to foster creative learning. Loneliness and isolation in adults is extremely common, something which only seems to have increased during the pandemic, and workshops such as these can be a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends.

As a Bath-based charity, it was important to us to work with local experts and we are really pleased to have connected with some of the city’s most talented artists. We are striving to make these workshops as accessible as possible in line with our organisational objectives around inclusion, and welcome access requests and comments to the email address email hidden; JavaScript is required.”

The workshop runs from 7-9pm and costs £45 a person. Concession price is available for Seniors 65+, Student, NHS and Blue Light.
