News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Continuing on from the success of this year’s A-Level results, Wells Cathedral School is thrilled to announce another excellent year of GCSE achievements across a wide range of subjects. Impressively, just under half of its pupils secured the top grades 7-9, with an equally impressive 12% attaining the very top grade of 9, and nearly 30% achieving Grades 8 to 9.

The pupils have been celebrating their remarkable success across the whole range of subjects studied at Wells from the Sciences to Drama, Maths to Music. Among the many highlights were the exceptional results in the individual science subjects, where 90% of pupils achieved Grades 6 to 9. In Physics, 36% of pupils earned a Grade 9, with 23% of Chemistry pupils also getting a Grade 9.

Drama pupils also excelled, with 80% achieving grades 7 to 9, and in Maths, 20% of pupils achieved the highest grade of 9.

Continuing a tradition of excellence, several of the school’s specialist musicians took GCSE Music at the end of Year 9, two years earlier than most GCSE candidates. Remarkably, 78% of these young musicians achieved either a Grade 8 or 9. These outstanding results reflect their dedication and talent, and they can look forward to their continued success as they progress to our specially devised “Wells Certificate” in Years 10 and 11.

With over 91% of Wells pupils securing a Grade 4 or above, they have very significantly outperformed the national average of 67.6% in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, all of which has been made possible because of the exceptional quality of education and support provided at Wells Cathedral School, as well as the hard work and dedication of the pupils and staff.

Alastair Tighe, Head Master, said, “It’s a source of great pride and joy to be able to celebrate such excellent results for our GCSE candidates. Achieving so many strong performances in so many different subjects is testament to the hard work of the pupils themselves as well as the dedication of their teachers and the support of their families.

“I’m delighted that these pupils have been able to demonstrate the Wells Cathedral School ethos so admirably: they have achieved wonderful academic results while also participating fully, and with similar success, in the wide range of co-curricular opportunities available to them.”
