Twins Charlotte and Sophie Churchill, 18, were among the girls celebrating outstanding A level results at the Royal High School Bath.
The girls from Bath, who were at the Royal High from the age of 3, scored a string of A*-A grades: Charlotte – two A* grades in Greek and Latin, and A in Maths; and Sophie – 3 As in English, French and Spanish. They have both secured places at top universities, one to study ancient languages and one to study modern languages.
“I had to go off and open my results alone when I picked them up at school because I was so nervous,” said Charlotte. “I am so delighted that we have both done so well and have got our university places.”
Twin Sophie, who will study French and Spanish at King’s College, London, has been previously nationally recognised for volunteering by the English Federation of Disability Sport, and has spent time overseas volunteering. She said, “We were both so nervous about picking up the results and I hardly slept. I am so relieved now but maybe too tired to celebrate just yet! We have been at school here since the nursery when we were 3 – it has served us very well!”
One in five girls at the Royal High, part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, scored all As and A*s in their A levels, with the top A* grade achieved in nearly a fifth of the exams (18.2%), while 91.7% of the exams taken achieved A*-C grades, both results up on last year (*including IB equivalent). More than half of the A level exams taken (53%) were awarded A*-A grades.
All of the school’s Oxbridge candidates secured their places with their fellow students securing places at other leading Russell Group universities thanks to some outstanding individual performances.
Students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma at the Royal High School achieved equally outstanding results with an average of 39 points out of 45, two points higher than its average last year, and well above the global average.

Our staff have worked hard to steer our girls through the changes in the system and ensure their hard work and talents have been recognised.
“This is a day to celebrate our students’ academic success but we also celebrate the mark they have made on this school in many other ways and we wish them well as they continue this journey at university and beyond.”
