There is a wide range of activities for families taking place across Bath this May half-term, including at three of the city’s best known museums.
At the Herschel Museum of Astronomy, the exhibition Invisible Light looks at William Herschel’s accidental discovery of infra-red light and its importance today. The drop in family activity focuses on prisms, with visitors having the chance to see how a prism splits light into the colours of the rainbow then make their own prism crystal suncatcher to hang in a sunny window at home.
The museum is also hosting a free family talk related to Invisible Light by Dr Bob Fosbury on Tuesday 28 May. Dr Fosbury will explain the importance of infrared in astronomy in the 21st century, helping scientists to discover black holes and life on other planets and look back in time to how galaxies were formed (flyer with details attached). The talk is ideal for children aged from 9 years and upwards.
No.1 Royal Crescent, meanwhile, explores the secret pockets that Georgian women wore – find out why they wore them and what they kept in them, then make and decorate your own replica pocket to take home.
At the Museum of Bath Architecture, there are two drop-in family activities to enjoy. Try the new Lego architecture challenges then find out why Bath’s architecture deserves World Heritage status and decorate a photo frame to display your favourite view of Bath.
