News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Heywood Prep in Corsham, Wiltshire, prides itself not only on being a happy and high-achieving school but also on creating a school ethos with community at its heart. As part of this, the pupils are encouraged to get involved with local charities and communities.

Heywood’s relationship with Hungerford House care home in Corsham is an example of this. Each Christmas children visit the care home and sing to the residents. This year a group of Year 5 pupils wanted to go one step further and teamed up with local businesses – The Corsham Bookshop, Theodora’s Flowers, The Deli at Corsham and May’s Greengrocers. Each of these local business generously donated time and gifts for the children to give to the residents.

“Our projects in the community really help our children to feel valued; the children realise that their small acts of kindness can bring a smile to someone’s face or make another’s day,” said Deputy Head, Tim O’Connell. “They really enjoy taking part in these initiatives and they have gained a huge sense of responsibility and confidence from them.

“Heywood Prep is incredibly proud of all the pupils whose enthusiasm and energy knows no bounds, and who regularly step up to suggest fundraising ideas and ways to spread kindness in our community.’
