News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

This August Bank Holiday Weekend families are invited to follow Alice down the rabbit hole in If Opera’s production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Recommended for children over four years and above, Will Todd’s acclaimed take on Lewis Carroll’s classic mixes opera with jazz and big show numbers in a musical extravaganza that promises to be a magical treat for children and adults alike.

Over one hour 10 minutes we’re told the story of Alice, an 11 year old girl who is jolted out of her daydreams when she meets a talking rabbit and follows him to a mysterious Wonderland. In this fantastical place, Alice encounters many peculiar characters, including a grinning cat, a mad hatter and a sleepy dormouse. She learns all is not well because a very cross Queen of Hearts seems keen to chop off everybody’s heads, but will Alice be able to save Wonderland?

There are two performances on Sunday 27 August at 1.30pm or 5pm, with the last showing being a relaxed performance with BSL Interpretation.

Gardens open one hour 30 minutes before each performance for picnicking and exploring. Performed against the backdrop of the grounds of Grade 1 listed Belcombe Court in Bradford on Avon, this is a lovely chance to explore and enjoy these gorgeous grounds, which have many nooks and crannies for children to have their own adventures in.

For those who wish to fully immerse themselves in Alice’s magical world, families can book a place at the ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ for the chance to meet some of Lewis Carroll’s most famous characters before the show.

“Beg, borrow or steal a ticket for Alice in Wonderland – this show is FANTASTIC, pure life-affirming joy.” Suzy Klein, BBC Radio 3
