Ian Waller and his wife enjoy a wonderfully delicious lunch at a unique restaurant on the edge of Bath city centre

This was, quite simply, one of the best lunches we have ever had in Bath! Yes, it was that good!

So Slow And Enjoy is one of Bath’s newest and smallest restaurant’s, located on the edge of the city centre on Rivers Street Place, just along from the Museum of Bath at Work. Owned by Maria, it is an absolute oasis of freshly prepared and beautifully meals that will have you planning your next visit before the mains are even finished!

There’s no menu at Go Slow And Enjoy. Rather, Maria prepares a choice of one or two new dishes each day with a care and passion that shows so clearly in each and every delicious mouthful. We called by for an early midweek lunch and were lucky enough to find a free table, although it certainly is worth booking in advance.

Maria’s one of those people who you just take to straightaway – welcoming and warm, she loves being part of the local community, with the regulars who call by all treated as friends.

For our visit, we served a wonderful salad starter (£9.20), freshly prepared on our arrival and bursting with the flavours of gorgeous dates, apricots, white cabbage, mango, lettuce, apple and beetroot, all in a perfectly seasoned dressing with fresh herbs taken from Maria’s own garden that somehow made it sweet and sharp at the same time. To be honest, if this had been the whole meal, my wife and I would still left extremely happy!

Maria is clearly someone who prepares her food with passion and imagination, with the recipes influenced by the flavours and tastes of her native Columbia, combined with a desire to really serve the best food that she possibly can.

And it shows. The luscious salad was soon joined by slow cooked tomatoes, eggs and mozzarella cheese (£10.50), with fresh spinach and basil, creating a dish that was just so comforting it should be on a list of perfect items to help your wellbeing! Alongside was a dish of chicken with saffron, parmesan and potato (£12) that beats just about anything I have ever eaten out in Bath! This was quite simply absolutely perfect – a culinary treat that was impossible to fault.

“I don’t have a menu and I don’t make sandwiches,” explained Maria. “I just do real food,” and boy does it show. When she bought out the lentil bread with cheese, olive oil and sea salt, it was just ideal for mopping up the remaining juices from the chicken and tomatoes, leaving plates so clean and diners mightily satisfied.

OK, there is a slight problem here. You see, you’re going to need to leave a little bit of room for the chocolate cake with sea salt (£4.50) – or better still, don’t, so that’s more left for me! As a lifelong lover of all things chocolate, this is absolutely in the premier league of puds – and the carrot cake was pretty special too!

So, there you go, a wonderful find for lunch on the edge of Bath’s bustling city centre. Sometimes the very best things really do come in small packages and that is certainly the case with Go Slow And Enjoy. It was fantastic!
