There’s a lot to look forward to over the October half term at the REME Museum in Lyneham near Chippenham. Alongside telling the exciting story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, complete with amazing exhibits – from toothbrushes to tanks – and hands on activities, there are also the trails, quizzes and craft areas that are open throughout the year for younger visitors.
Trails
For younger visitors, the museum offers seasonal trails full of objects to spot and questions to answer during their visit. These trails are designed to get children engaged with the museum displays and with REME history. Visitors can pick up a trail map at the front desk – there is a choice of special trails throughout the year so try a new one each time, or download the general trail guide here.
Every year one of the museum’s trails features its hand painted REME gnomes, always with a new theme! In 2024, the gnomes had a new makeover to represent some different trades and roles within REME.
Quizzes

Crafts Area
The REME Museum recently added a brand new family crafts area. Situated just through the end of the World War Two Gallery and next to the Education Suite, find tables big enough for family groups to sit and enjoy some colouring in, activity sheets or junk model-making (available during school holidays). Simply help yourself!
Playpark
The purpose-built playpark adds a whole lot more fun to a visit! Whether you’re coming to the museum, the Crown’s Cafe or just passing by, there’s plenty of REME-themed equipment for young ones to enjoy.
From helicopter slides to climbing frames, there’s something for everyone.
Holiday Activities
During half terms and school holidays, the museum regularly host all kinds of activities. From family workshops in its dedicated education space, led by tjhe Education Officer, to arts and crafts in the galleries. These are free to attend but places may require booking. Special Events
Keep an eye out for upcoming family friendly event days at the museum! It hosts an annual programme of special events from the Christmas Fair to the Wartime Britain weekend that provide fun for all ages. Visit the Events page for upcoming event days.
Crown’s Cafe
While you’re enjoying your visit to the REME Museum, there’s also the chance to visit Crown’s Cafe for a snack or a lunch. The menu includes breakfast rolls, homemade cakes, fresh barista coffees and a hot food menu that features freshly made sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis, as well as daily lunch specials. For the youngest visitors we have special lunch packs and tasty hot options.
