News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

A unique musical playground has opened at Prior Park Landscape Garden in Bath. Created by wooden playground specialist, TouchWood, Sounding The Wood features a series of ‘instruments’ set within the woodland of Prior Park. Created out of various tree species especially for Prior Park, the instruments explore how sound is created in a range of ways. There will be four instruments which children – and adults – are free to experiment with in the Summer House glade.

Sounding the Wood is part of Forest of Imagination, the festival that celebrates creativity in children with exciting work created especially for them. Sounding the Wood is free to access with normal admission to Prior Park Landscape Garden, and free to National Trust members.

As part of the project, Sound UK is running workshops for year one pupils in Oldfield Infants, St John’s Keynsham, Coombedown and Batheaston schools. The workshops are being led by the highly regarded percussionist David Insua-Cau and pupils will learn the key elements of music, create a natural soundscape
and create their own ‘woodland instruments’ from natural materials.

Sounding the Wood will conclude in December with a magical sound and light installation, Alight! Running during the evenings of 15 – 17 December, the ponds, trees and pathways of Prior Park will be transformed by leading international artists Kathy Hinde and Ulf Pedersen whose work features, sound, light, projection
and automata.
