News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

An interactive contemporary classical performance based on the natural world is coming to the Wiltshire Music Centre this weekend, offering an ideal way to make classical music accessible and interesting for children.

Performed by Riot Ensemble, who have been connecting people to great contemporary music since 2012, this is no ordinary concert performance – instead of sitting and watching from afar, the audience will be invited to engage in an interactive experience across the entirety of WMC before joining the auditorium for a full concert performance. Audience members will explore the ensemble’s creative process and find out how they make their instruments make the sounds they do as they perform a repertoire inspired by the natural world.

The performance will culminate in a performance of Anthozoa, composed by young composer and environmentalist Gabriella Smith, a piece which depicts the vibrant and indispensable life that inhabits coral reefs. The players will manipulate their instruments to replicate the sounds of water and the sounds you hear standing on the shoreline.

Violin player, Marie Schreer, said, “We are very excited to perform in Wiltshire this week and can’t wait to share with you this wonderful programme of music inspired by natural sounds and experimental playfulness.”

You can hear Marie talk through the female composers highlighted in the repertoire in a video exclusively for WMC here.

Young people can take advantage of a special £6 ticket offer for under 25s. The concert performance will also be available to livestream from 8.15pm as part of Wiltshire Music Centre’s WMC Digital livestreaming series.
