News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Autumn is always a wonderful time to be in Bath – and it’s made even more special by Bath Children’s Literature Festival, which brings together a stellar line-up of authors and illustrators, with events for children of all ages.

We’ve picked out some not-to-be-missed highlights that have a particular special interest for local families.

Julia Golding – Jane Austen Investigates

Do you have the skills that make a good detective? Come and find out in an interactive session with author Julia Golding (Jane Austen Investigates), following in the footsteps of the young Jane Austen. Crimes will be uncovered, baddies will be unmasked and there may even be time for a quick game of Regency cricket. Perfect for all the family – and a great introduction for young readers to one of Bath’s most famous literary heroines.

Jane Austen Investigates With Julia Golding, Saturday 7 October, 10.00–10.45, Guildhall, Age 9+

Ally Sherrick Vita and the Gladiators

Come on a time travel adventure at the Roman Baths with author Ally Sherrick, inspired by her new Roman mystery, Vita and the Gladiator. Ally will reveal the places, events and people that inspired the story – and some of the fun and curious things she’s found out about life in Roman Britain along the way. With storytelling, a Q&A and an interactive ‘build a gladiator’ session, this is an unmissable event for history fans!

Vita The Gladiator with Ally Sherrick, Saturday 7 October, 1400-1445, Minerva Room at Roman Bath, ages 9+

Jen Reid A Hero Like Me!

Join activist and icon Jen Reid for a craft-filled event around her debut picture book A Hero Like Me! Jen will talk about her upbringing in Bath and discuss the events of June 2020, when a statue of Edward Colston was pulled down in Bristol and thrown into the harbour. Jen spontaneously climbed up onto the empty plinth and raised her fist above her head, becoming an iconic image and one of the defining moments of 2020. Jen will read from her book and help the children create their own protest poster – what will you put on yours?

A Hero Like Me with Anti-Racism Protestor Jen Reid, Sunday 8 October, 13.00–13.45, Bath Cricket Club, Age 5+

Tracy Darnton My Brother is an Avacado

Join us for storytelling and fruit and vegetable fun as we join the waiting game for a new baby with local author Tracy Darnton. Is this ‘onion’ going to make them cry? Will they fit in the bath with a massive ‘watermelon’? And, of course, can you cuddle an avocado?

My Brother is an Avacado with Tracy Darnton, Saturday 30 September, 11-11.45, Bath Cricket Club, ages 3+

Joanna Nadin and Laura Wood Romancing the Past

For older readers, another bestselling local author, Joanna Nadin (A Calamity of Mannerings), will be in conversation with fellow YA writer Laura Wood (The Agency For Scandal). Fans of romance, mischief, Bridgerton and historical fiction are in for a treat with these two brilliant YA writers as they discuss their inspirations, writing process, favourite novels and much more.

Through lively and thought-provoking exercises, you’ll gain confidence in writing and harness the power of your own voice. The workshop will be a super friendly and relaxed space where you can enjoy being creative with your baby alongside you (or come along solo, for some me time), make connections, share stories – and fall in love with writing. No writing experience is necessary.
