Christmas shows at The Egg Theatre in Bath are always a real treat and this year there’s something extra special with the world premiere of Wendy: A Peter Pan Story.
Written by multi-award-winning James Baldwin, the production fuses together J.M. Barrie’s world-famous story with 21st century theatre in an unforgettable adventure for family audiences. Appearing from Friday 1st December to Saturday 13th January, the new stage show continues The Egg’s ‘proud tradition of delivering beautiful Christmas treats (The Stage).
In the faded kitchen of a once-grand townhouse, Wendy is growing up fast, perhaps a little too fast. Between her homework and caring for her family, Wendy dreams of one last childhood adventure.
In fly Peter and his friend Tink, a mischievous pair who can’t or won’t grow up. When they steal Wendy away to The Neverland, the stage is set for a thrilling battle against time, against Hook and against magic! Wendy: A Peter Pan Story speaks of the innocence and wonder of childhood and the importance of imagination and creativity.
Commenting on Wendy: A Peter Pan Story, writer James Baldwin said, “I fell in love with the Neverland when working as an actor on a production of Peter Pan in 2009. Soon after, I started facilitating workshops using Peter Pan with young people; the story always particularly connected with children who were young carers, and children who were looked after. There were always big discussions around why Peter brought children to Neverland to be his mother and how that would feel for a modern-day Wendy.
“Wendy: A Peter Pan Story is rooted in J.M. Barrie’s little-known original play and follows the structure of the popular novel. I’m playing with themes that are sometimes forgotten: The Darlings are facing tough times and are trying to keep up appearances; Peter is often cunning and tricky, and all the young people long to make sense of the grown-ups in their lives.
“I think Peter Pan is eternal because J.M. Barrie created a story that was eternally wrestling with the question, ‘How to grow up?’. I don’t think any of us will ever truly know, but I hope creativity, imagination and the love of friends and family are part of the answer.”
