Attic Studios is open again, offering a range of music production and recording opportunities for young people aged from eight years upwards.
Based in the centre of bath, Attic Studios was founded by Adam Volsen who is better known as being one half of DJ and Producer outfit, The Allergies.
“At Attic Studios we specialise in one-to-one music tuition for young people,” explained Adam. “Our focus is to offer guidance, hands-on opportunities and industry knowledge in areas of music production, vocal recording and DJing. We believe strongly in using music to empower young people and have experienced music tutors on hand to offer positive opportunities to those who want to learn more about making music.
“Now seems an especially important time to get young people back into enjoying music, hobbies and positive learning. All of our tutors are really inspiring people who know how facilitate creative learning and be inspiring roles models.”
Adam explained that Attic Studios offers –
Music Production
“Music Production and Music Technology are a large part of what we do here at the studio. We have a number of DAW applications including Logic and Ableton. Although these are industry standard programs, they are also very hands-on and easy to get moving with. With most students we start with the basics and work our way up. But we are also here to facilitate students who may be working alongside a GCSE or higher learning qualification. This includes working with loops, understanding song arrangements & bpms, drum programming, basic synthesis and even mixing and mastering.”
DJing
“DJing is a fun way for young people to learn and understand more about music arrangements and express themselves by playing the music they like. With most music now being in digital format, we are able to download music very quickly, which means DJing has become very accessible. We also have some great DJ kit which includes an easy to use DJ controller. Our tutors have years of experience playing at clubs and festivals all over the world. Once we’ve got the fundamentals down, we usually start working on mixtapes and building an online profile for the young people. It’s a lot of fun!”
Vocal Recording
“The idea of recording your own voice can be strange and daunting, but lots of young people love to sing and rap, and it’s another great way for them to express themselves. Young people will also get the opportunity to work on song writing techniques, before learning how to do the practical parts of recording and editing vocals.
“Sometimes someone will come into the studio with little more than an idea in their head. Then in a few weeks they have not only produced their own track, but written and recorded lyrics to it too. It’s such a great feeling for them to take a finished track home to show their parents and friends!”
Hayden, aged 13, has made good use of the resources and training at Attic Studio. He commented, “I recommend Adam to anyone who wants to improve or learn a new skill. I really enjoy our lessons and he’s really good at teaching me new techniques.”
