News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Families are being invited to take part in the Walk of Life event this year on Saturday 21 May to support the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Everyone taking part will have the option to walk the marathon 26.2 miles or take the 10 mile route. Take part with friends, your dog or go solo.  It will be a day full of countryside views, thousands of steps and plenty of cheers!

This event is organised by the Royal United Hospitals Bath charity, The Forever Friends Appeal, and there are two options to choose from – either walk the full 26.2 miles from Bishops Canning near Devizes, along the beautiful Kennet and Avon canal to the finish line at Holbourne Museum in Bath.  Alternatively, there’s the 10 mile distance, where you can join the walkers in Bradford on Avon in the afternoon.

Peter Giles, from Kingston Langley in North Wiltshire took part in last year’s event with his family in memory of his wife. “It was such a fantastic day, with a wonderful atmosphere from start to finish, great company on the walk, a huge sense of achievement at the finish line, and knowing all the time how much the money raised will help a very good cause!

“My late wife Val had a couple of 10 day stays in the RUH, with complications from the MS she lived with for nearly 45 years. The second stay, sadly, ended with her death seven years ago, but throughout both stays she couldn’t have asked for better or more sympathetic care.  She had nothing but the highest praise for all the staff, and for her treatment – they deserve our help.”

Karlie Evans, Events and Community Manager, added, “We are really looking forward to the Walk of Life again, now in its 17th year! Every step our walkers will take, will help our hospital to continue to provide extraordinary healthcare for everyone. With your support, we’ll be able to push the boundaries of healthcare through innovation, research, cutting-edge equipment, enhancing spaces, and supporting staff even further.”

The Walk of Life event is open to everyone, and costs £15 to register (£8 for children under 18 years old).  Participants are asked to raise a minimum £100.

In return, The Forever Friends Appeal will provide walkers with lots of fundraising and training support, complimentary refreshments and lunch, as well as a medal and t-shirt, and plenty of finish line celebrations.
