News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Crofton Beam Engines is holding Steaming Days over the August Bank Holiday weekend, giving families a wonderful chance to step back in time and learn more about these machines.

The Steaming Days take place on 28 & 29 August, giving visitors a rare chance to see these magnificent machines in action and speak to the volunteers who keep them running.

Built in 1809 near Marlborough to supply water to the highest point of the Kennet and Avon Canal, the Crofton Beam Engines offer a snapshot from a time when steam was king and coal fuelled the Industrial Revolution; a place that is well worth a visit. Canals were the motorways of the 1800s, used to transport materials all over the country. But what happens if a canal is built on a hill – where does the water go and how does the canal keep flowing? It was here that all these questions were asked and then answered.

En route, the first thing you’ll spot will be the 25-metre chimney rising out above the trees. Don’t forget to pick up a visitor leaflet and survey form from the site entrance when you arrive. Explore the grounds, become a beam, and run your own canal in the play area; learn about the outside buildings and displays or visit the onsite toilets if you’ve had a long journey.

Step into the Boiler House to learn about the Lancashire boiler, the power source of the station, creating steam to run the engines. Follow the steam through five more rooms to discover how each part works together to lift water 40 feet and keep the canal running. If you’re lucky the Well will be open, but you’ll have to see that for yourselves to know what it’s all about. You’ll also have a chance to speak to some of the wonderful volunteers and ask them really difficult questions.

While you’re here why not make use of the eight outdoor picnic tables and bring lunch, lapping up the sunshine and watching the canal boats move slowly through the locks. Or tie-up up your walking boots and grab your backpack to walk along the canal towpath to the summit and see Bruce Tunnel. Apparently the horses used to go over the top and the boats had to be legged through, imagine that!
