News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

It’s time to leave the littles with granny and venture into the scary side of Bath with a spooky trip to House of Frankenstein – if you dare…

As Halloween approaches and the scary beasts and monsters of Bath emerge from their underground lairs, there’s one place for the chance of fright has just increased – with the screams of previous visitors still echoing around the corridors to prove it…

Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein is already one of the most creative, enjoyable and ever so slightly scary visitor experiences in Bath. When Halloween arrives, however, the spookiness goes up to 11 with its After Dark fun, which runs from 21-31 October, 6-11pm. Aimed at visitors aged 15+, the experience sees you greeted at the door by one of the suitably spooky attired guests who hands over a not at all bright mini tour, with a wish of good luck, and sends you off around the stairs, corridors, rooms and – if you date – cellars of an almost dark Victorian house.

But look out – along the way, in the shadows and around the corners, are all manner of ghoulish apparition and chilling being who will make your hair stand on end, your knees knock and yes, even demand the occasional scream.

While the creatures won’t touch you – and you mustn’t touch them – their ability to shred your nerves is almost supernaturally terrible… And just as you think you’ve escaped one, there’s a new one to just around the next corner…

As you slowly creep up the stairways, there is the chance to check out the amazing selection of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley exhibits that during a daytime visit would be fascinating. During After Dark, however, only the bravest souls will dare spend long looking at the information panels and displays while there’s a chance of a ghostly creature emerging right behind you.

So is it fun? Absolutely! Was it scary? Judging by the screams of some of the later visitors while we were enjoying a post-fright cocktail at Bloody Mary’s bar on the ground floor, it certainly can be, but then everyone was smiling and happy before they left, so nothing too disturbing. It’s also a great way to start or finish a night out in Bath, with the whole experience not needing to take more than an hour.
