A combined group of singers from St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Prep in Calne added a little sunshine to a Spring term performance of the Major Minors Children’s Choir.
The Spring Concert, held in the Southwell Hall at St Margaret’s Prep, featured a wide-ranging musical programme that included classics by Benjamin Britten and Irving Berlin to the all-time favourite, Naughty from the hit musical Matilda. There was even a song performed entirely in Latin, O Salutaris Hostia by Meirion Wynne Jones – an impressive feat especially in such a short term.
A special highlight was The Wide Missouri, which also featured St Mary’s student, Mia, on flute. What a treat!
Musical Director of the choir, Mrs Bethan Dudley Fryar, applauded the children’s efforts, particularly for learning all of the lyrics and having the confidence to stand up and sing in front of an audience, sometimes in small groups and some singing solo parts for the very first time.
After the performance, certificates were presented to the children for completing a successful Spring Term along with a few special awards, including Most Outstanding Vocalist, Most Improved Vocalist, Most Dedicated Chorister, Conductor’s Merit Award, Fabulous Focus Award, Super Role Model Award, Rising Star Award – and even a special ‘Matilda’ Award!
Mr Luke Bromwich, Headmaster of St Margaret’s Prep who opened and closed the concert, remarked on the incredible progress the choir has made since its first concert. He also gave his special best wishes to the children as they get ready to present their first ‘public’ performance at the Calne Library on Saturday 25 March as part of the Calne Spring Sing!
The Major Minors Children’s Choir is open to girls and boys in Years 3 to 6 at local primary schools who share a love of singing. The choir rehearses every Monday at St Mary’s and work on a range of songs, across different music genres, with the aim of presenting an end-of-term performance each term. As the choir grows and develops, it is hoped they will perform at school and community events.
