News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Gavin Phelps, a student at Ralph Allen school in Bath, has taken to the stage at the prestigious Bath Abbey to wow the audience with his engaging organ recital.

Year 10 pupil Gavin, aged 14, is heavily involved in all areas of the school’s music offering and was invited to perform an organ recital at Bath Abbey in front of more than 100 people.

His mother, Lisa Betteridge, said, “Gavin is the head chorister of Bath Abbey Boys Choir, and its musical director, Huw Williams, gave him the opportunity to perform at the recital. This is his third recital at Bath Abbey, so I am a lot calmer now but had been nervous before.

“He has been having organ lessons for four years now and is around Grade 8 standard. He likes the fact he has all these sounds at his disposal and enjoys all the intricacies of the pedals of the organ.”

Huw Williams added, “Gavin has been associated with our Abbey music for many years and he is Head Chorister of our boys choir. He has already distinguished himself as an organist and we are proud of Gavin’s excellent achievements.

“This series frequently welcomes professional musicians and it is remarkable that one as young as Gavin can hold his own in such prestigious company.”

Ralph Allen School head teacher, Nathan Jenkins, said, “Having a pupil as young as Gavin invited to play at such a prestigious venue is a fantastic achievement. He has shown great talent both in and out of the school.

“He is very much involved in our orchestra, jazz band and choir, which have supported him on his musical journey.

“At Ralph Allen we offer opportunities for our pupils to show how they can benefit from being part of a wider family beyond their school.“
