A child-free evening meal out at one of Bath’s most dependable eateries

We love our children, it’s just, you know how it is, sometimes we just need a bit of time out. So when we discovered the Bar + Block is offering a new steak sharing experience – including a classic 16oz chateaubriand or two speciality prime cuts, paired with sides and a bottle of wine to share for £90 – well, that was perfect for an adults only night out for two.

We’ve been to Bar + Block in Bath – in the ground floor of the Premier Inn – a few times before, with and without the children. On each occasion the service was excellent and the food dependably good, with plenty on the menu for even the pickiest little eaters.

This time, however, we were making the most of the new steak sharing offer before nipping over the Theatre Royal for its latest production. Our waitress for the evening was, true to form, delightful, friendly and very good at her job. In fact, she get top marks straight away for the beef popcorn on the table – a real Bar + Block feature!

My wife I, eager to be finished in time for the show, went straight for the Chateaubriand, rare (other levels of cooking at available), with side of chunky chips for me, fries for Ellen, accompanied by green veg and mushrooms.

And I’m glad to say that the result was superb. With the steak served in slice on a bed of samphire, each element of the meal was cooked to perfect. In fact, I’ve had more expensive steaks elsewhere in Bath that weren’t as good tender and tasty as this one, so top marks to the chef.

The sides and chips, meanwhile, were similarly excellent, all accompanied by a bottle of Barolo and a super sweet non-alcoholic cocktail. Throughout our waitress was attentive and friendly, checking that everything was just as we wanted it. Perhaps the best proof of success of the meal was the clean plates and empty side bowls, all gladly consumed with relish.

In fact, the only let down of the evening was absolutely of our own doing – we left it too late to have puddings as well, and make it to the theatre on time – and I really had my eyes set on the caramalised banoffee cheesecake!

All-in-all, this was another very successful – and tasty – visit to Bar + Block. With a wide range of meals on offer – including a kids’ menu, breakfasts, Sunday roast and even a Boxing Day menu, there’s pretty much something for all diners at Bar + Block. Just make sure that you don’t miss out on the beef popcorn!
