On Thursday, 11 April, First Steps Twerton Community Nursery is celebrating National Pet Day—an unofficial holiday that encourages us to appreciate the vital role our furry companions play in our lives.
“Biscuit and Brownie, the preschool guinea pigs, provide a valuable part of the children’s development, teaching them essential life skills and providing companionship along the way,” commented First Steps Chief Executive, Roz Lambert. “This is a moment to shower them with extra love and gratitude.
“Pets teach children about responsibility and compassion. Taking care of a pet involves feeding, grooming, and ensuring their well-being. This fosters a sense of duty and empathy in children, as they learn to look after another living being.
“Caring for a pet helps children develop empathy. They begin to understand the feelings of others, including their furry companions. This skill is crucial for early social interactions and building positive relationships.
“Looking after a pet involves following instructions, which supports speech and language development. Children learn to listen, follow routines, and communicate effectively while caring for their four-legged friends.
“Developing positive feelings toward pets contributes to a child’s self-esteem and self-confidence. A good relationship with a pet can boost a child’s sense of self-worth and trust in their abilities.
“Remember, every day can be a pet day, but on April 11th, let’s go the extra mile to celebrate the joy, companionship, and unconditional love our pets bring into our lives.”
