Sevington Victorian School at Grittleton near Chippenham is holding a series of summer Sundays events to allow families a visit back to schooling in Victorian times.
Sevington offers an authentic village schoolroom, opened in 1849, closed in 1913 and still almost unchanged, with some of the original desks, slates, coal fires and oil lamps. During the week, it offers today’s pupils to have a first-hand experience of Victorian education, in costume and in role. The day is run by Miss Elisabeth Squire, the Sevington schoolmistress and her sister Miss Hannah Squire.
Over the summer, the school is offering a series of special events to families.
Sunday 16 June: Miss Squire’s Portmanteau
Packed with mystery objects, Miss Squire’s portmanteau holds everything from bulls’ eyes to a poison bottle. Between them, the ten objects tell the story of her life. A chance to handle and explore everyday things from Victorian times.
Sunday 21 July: A Victorian Education
Miss Squire will be presiding over the schoolroom this Sunday to give modern children a taste of Victorian education.

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September: Heritage weekend
