Ian Waller enjoys a Sunday evening out at Bath’s best comedy venue

Alright, yes, I admit it – up to a few weeks ago I’d never heard of Lloyd Griffiths (sorry Lloyd!), despite, so I was told, his appearances on loads of telly including 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Jonathan Ross’ Comedy Club, Question of Sport, Not Going Out, House of Games and other stuff too!

Still, with so many successful visits to Komedia in Bath over the last however many years, I was confident enough to book tickets on their recommendation alone. Also, an evening of comedy is always a perfect way to start end the weekend.

As it happens, Lloyd Griffiths is one of those full of energy, audience loving, quick witted and genuinely likeable types of performers that it’s pretty difficult not to take to. Right from the start, he’s at the front of the stage, chatting with the audience, dishing out the mickey takes – including those aimed at himself – and generating the laughs.

In no time at all, he’s uncovered audience members on witness protection schemes, been befuddled by the names of Wiltshire town and admitted to a particular occasion when he was laughed at by every member of the crowd at a Grimsby Town FC match.

As the evening progresses, Lloyd’s covering subjects as diverse as his relationship break-up, hotel porn, the benefits of orthopaedic pillows, facial hair and getting old, with plenty of audience input along the way, all delivered with a smooth and well rehearsed patter. What was missing was all-too familiar jibes at the mess that is British politics at the moment, and the act was better for it. The result was fresh and unpredictable, carried along by Lloyd’s own enthusiasm and character, and all clearly appreciated by a happy audience.

With the likes of Hal Cruttenden, Simon Brodkin, Russel Howard (yes, him!), Zoe Lyons and Danny Baker lined up for the coming weeks, there’s always plenty to look forward to at Komedia Bath. Add in regular burlesque evenings, Bingo Lingo and the Krater Comedy Club, and there’s always a good excuse for a comedy night out!
