News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Families and children are being asked to make a splash for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) as part of its South West Splash fundraising event.

The charity, which runs B&NES and West Wiltshire’s local children’s hospice Charlton Farm, is urging supporters to take part in a water-based activity to raise vital funds to support children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Hollie Thorogood, CHSW event fundraiser said anyone could take part in the South West Splash. “Whether you choose to do a swim, surf, sail or another fun activity in the water, we want people to make a splash and help raise vital funds to make the most of short and precious lives,” she said.

“It could be in your paddling pool, local swimming pool or the open water – there is nothing too small or too big, so get those swimming costumes, shorts or wet suits on and make a huge difference.”

Hollie said various swim clubs and businesses had taken the plunge last year, including Julie Gazzard’s Swim Academy where hundreds of children embraced challenges suited to their aquatic ability and collectively raised over £3,000 for the charity.

Julie Gazzard, founder of the Julie Gazzard Swim Academy, recalls, “Last year was great and gave the academy a purpose and a goal to work towards. It was so easy and the hospice were great when providing support and any materials that we needed.”

Taking part in it could help fund hydrotherapy sessions at Charlton Farm for children and young people with stiff joints, muscle spasms or muscle wasting conditions. The therapeutic experience of water can help improve flexibility and reduce pain, as well as allowing them to have fun and make precious memories with their families.

“It’s completely free to sign up to South West Splash and if you can raise more than £30, you will receive a certificate and swimming medal to show off,” added Hollie.
