News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Real-life schools of rock from Trowbridge and Bath raised the roof when more than 40 young musicians from The Rock Project Bath & Trowbridge had the audience dancing in the aisles.

It was standing room only at the Roper Theatre in Haysfield Girls’ School with more than 100 people in the audience as the students, took to the stage.

The young musicians, aged from just 7 to 18, attend weekly sessions in The Arc Theatre, Trowbridge and Beechen Cliff School, Bath where they learn guitar, bass, singing or drums from professional gigging musicians.

The concert is the culmination of a year’s work where they get to rehearse and perform the music they love in a band.

Organiser Mike Aris said, “We have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback of students, their family and friends for what was one of the best Rock Project gigs we’ve ever staged.

“By performing in a proper theatre with lighting and sound rigs, students had a real feel of a genuine rock gig – made even more authentic by the incredible summer weather which all added to the typical rock festival atmosphere – and heat!

“Some of the students have never performed publicity before so this was an event none of them will forget.”

The students performed a wide range of music from Black Sabbath and Coldplay to the La’s and Scissor Sisters. They also formed a small acoustic set for guitars and ukulele while the tutors joined forces for a rendition of a Fleetwood Mac classic.

Student of the Year awards were also presented to students from both schools who constantly rehearsed and improved their musical skills.

These are: Martha Mills (Bath juniors) Vince Kendall-Dunn (Bath seniors) Nichola Kaczmarek (Trowbridge juniors) and Lucja Korczak (Trowbridge seniors).
