News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Swim Central is now offering swimming lessons for toddlers and children at its new venue at Downside School, located in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, between Bath and Frome. The lessons are for children aged 2+ and 4+, no matter what their ability.

“Our new facility at Downside means that we can offer more great swimming lessons and aqua-fit classes than ever before,” said Swim Central’s Director, Kelly Deakin. “This is a really exciting time, and we can’t wait to welcome new members to the Swim Central family.

“Our approach is simple. We encourage confidence development through play and exploration, ensuring that our young swimmers develop at a pace that suits them. We recognise that all swimmers are unique and have different needs; making sure that they’re happy and having fun is the most important thing.

“We keep the size of our toddler and children’s swimming classes to a maximum of six, ensuring that all the swimmers have the opportunity to work closely with their swimming teacher and aren’t left behind. This personal approach means that we can monitor their progress closely.”

Kelly explained that the Swimtots sessions for children aged 2+ are specifically designed to get toddlers comfortable in the water and having fun, all whilst teaching them valuable water safety skills. “Water isn’t something that toddlers should fear and by introducing it at an early age, they can develop water confidence and have fun playing games at the same time.”

The Swimtots sessions at Downside take place on Mondays from 10-11am, Wednesdays 9.30-10.30am and Fridays 10-11am.

The Learn to Swim lessons, meanwhile, are for ages 4+, offering the perfect way to get your children swimming. “Our Learn to Swim lessons are an excellent way for swimmers to develop confidence in the water, regardless of their current swimming ability,” said Kelly. “Whether they’ve never been in the water before or already know the basics, Learn to Swim covers all the core skills that swimmers need to become confident swimmers.

The Learn To Swim lessons take place on Mondays from 5-6pm and Fridays 4.15-6.30pm.

“All our lessons are centred around having fun in the water, no matter what your ability level is,” added Kelly. “After all, swimming should be enjoyable, and if it’s not, swimmers are unlikely to continue learning and won’t develop vital water confidence and water safety skills.

“When it comes to our toddler and children’s swimming lessons, we use play as an effective way to teach essential skills. Our team of swimming teachers incorporate play into as much of the lesson as possible, teaching the swimmers the importance of staying safe in the water whilst also developing key skills that they’ll need moving forward.”

Alongside the lessons at Downside, Swim Central also offers swimming lessons at the Royal United Hospital and Prior Park College in Bath. You can also find out more about adult swimming lessons, Mermaid lessons and parties, and aqua yoga by calling 01225 800212 or visiting www.swimcentral.org.uk/
